Please explain. In Genesis 1:1-2 God created heaven and earth and, at that time, there was only darkness. Then, in Genesis 1:3-5 He brought light into the physical creation and separated the light (Day) from the darkness (Night) and created the first in the succession of days in his physical creation with the evening (Night) coming first and the morning (Day) following the evening. So, the days were established, meaning both the dark and the light portions of each day in their cyclical pattern on the 2nd day of creation. This was before the creation of the sun, moon and stars which he made on the 4th day of creation. With this in mind it is my understanding that even if the sun, moon and stars disappeared the sequence of days would still continue with their dark and light portions in tact without them. In Genesis 1:14-19 (the 4th day) God created the sun to rule the day, (the word “rule” came from a hebrew noun meaning rule (as in our noun meaning, a ruler to measure)), moon to rule the night (noun, “rule” with same meaning “a ruler” to measure), and stars (no noun “rule” attached to stars in verse 16. In verse 18 the sun, moon and stars are decreed “to rule (verb, as in ruling, ordering, to have domain, to reign) over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness:” Now back in Gen 1;14-15 the purpose of the lights (the sun, moon and stars) was “to divide the day from the night; and for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth:” Now it appears that the sun, moon and stars were created not to establish the succesion of days or just to distinguish night from day (because that was already done in creation day 2). But it seems that the sun, moon and stars were created so that we could gauge (as with a ruler (a noun)) where we are in the succession of days. It also appears that they (the sun, moon and stars) were set up to “rule” (a verb) possibly meaing that they actually bring about events in the creation. Now my question is this: If these were the purposes of the sun, moon and stars and we can use them as a (noun) ruler to gauge where we are in the succession of time, is astrnomical study (or astrology) truly against the word of God? There appears to be scripture that links this kind of study to witchcraft and divination which is condemned. But if God gave us the sun, moon and stars for this purpose, to know where we are on the prophetic timeline and what to expect in the future I wouldn’t want to reject it. There seems to be a conflict on this issue. It is my wish to be able to use all of the tools God has provided but not do anything he has commanded us not to do which would be displeasing to him. Please respond. Thank you.
There has been a persistent battle between the “science” of religion and the “religion” of science. But with true “Theology” there is no conflict because there are natural or scientific answers to questions raised in Scriptures. Genesis 1 is the biggest case where natural events caused incredible changes that brought the earth to a place where life can abound.
And interesting play on words happens in the name of Genesis in Hebrew. The first word “bereshith” is normally translated “In the beginning” and Genesis is the book of beginnings — although this is most often ignored. However, bere shith (two words) can also mean “I made six” and then the verse continues and proclaims that Elohim made heaven and earth and also made six. There was a time before “the beginning” when EL created. Then came a time when Elohim (the Family of EL) also created.
The picture painted by Genesis one shows that the earth starts out as a dark and empty place or had become this way as a result of natural disasters. Who or what was there “before the beginning” we can only know from natural evidence buried in the depths of earth and in the ice packs of Greenland, etc.
Genesis shows that the very first act was to set a distinction between night and day. The earth starts out in “night” or darkness, but now light was to come on the earth. There is more spiritual meaning symbolized by the physical than is recogized. The intent was to separate “darkness” and “Light” and to bring “Light” to the earth! So what happens on the first “day” is an expression of the spiritual symbolized by the physical. The goal of the “beginning” is for Elohim to walk the earth!
So in order to accomplish this goal the earth had to be adjusted so that it could be made into an ideal place for life to survive. This required several great acts that came about through natural means built into the structure of the universe. The earth could have been spinning at a rate much higher than now and there could have been 400 “days” in the year. Apparently there was no atmosphere.
The next event was to separate the waters on the earth and from that to create an atmosphere or troposphere that had water above in the stratosphere and water on the earth. This also caused the rotational speed of the earth to slow down. The separation of the waters could have been caused by a massive cosmic dust cloud that caused not only the darkness but also a large and sustained burst of energy from the sun causing the water on earth to boil. This heat is believed to reach as far as Mars causing its water to come to the surface. Core samples taken from the Greenland ice cap show at one point high concentrations of Iridium, which came from cosmic dust.
Then tectonic events caused massive earthquakes, volcanism, and great movements of land mass to shift and adjust around the earth. This is another indication that the emerging land masses could have happened as a result of “putting on the brakes.” The effect of gravity pushing on the earth as the earth spun it way in the solar system may have changed as a result of a decrease in rotational speed. There may have been other adjustments in the solar system happening at the same time. But that can only be speculation from what we know now.
At the same time the land masses appeared and the seas settled down, then it was possible for grasses, plants, and trees to start growing. This, of course, takes some time as we gardeners know. The atmosphere began to fill with oxygen and nitrogen as the lush forests and plants set about doing their job. The air was rich in carbon dioxide as a result of volcanoes. Nitrogen was produced by decay. Oxygen was produced by life.
Then the fourth day comes. At this time the earth had reached a stable condition and then the solar events (equinoxes, and solstices) marked the division of the year into four equal quarters. The number of days in a year was set at 364. Each of the twelve months had its own star or constellation. The moon’s orbit was fixed at 354 days. And the earth was now a prime location in the universe for Life and Light (spiritual and physical). Now the sun, moon, and stars can be relied on for signs, and for the setting of appointed times.
The only thing left was the creation of living creatures, insects, fish, birds, mammals, and for human kind.
There are some interesting things that happened after humans started to look around and learn from what they saw and experienced on earth.
It must have been interesting to live when the earth was fresh and growing. The atmosphere was rich in oxygen and moisture. The temperature from pole to pole must have been stable with mild changes. Some think that people were living during an ice age, however, there must have been a massive ice age before there was an atmosphere.
Also because of the water above there was very little radiocarbon forming in the troposphere. The water in the stratosphere was held at a temperature slightly above freezing. This is the point when water is most dense. When water becomes a solid it has expanded and will float. The dense water above provided a shield against cosmic and gamma rays thus preventing the formation of radiocarbon. Consequently, people lived a long time as the DNA could reproduce without mutations caused by unstable carbon entering the DNA structure. After the flood radiocarbon was able to form and life span started to decline rapidly.
Enoch wrote that he was the first one to write down in books. Although it is difficult to prove, he may have been the creator of the Ancient Hebrew “alephbeth”.
Enoch also commented about the types of plants and trees. However, this was only the beginning as the gene pool was very rich and new varieties were forming every season. This was true not only of plants, but of all life forms including human life.
Another problem that had to be solved was navigation. It is believed that Enoch devised a way to site the stars and sun to determine where he was on earth and when it was. This instrument was much later picked up as the Celtic cross and is used by Christians as an icon. But its original purpose is more profound. Its design consisted of two beams crossed and joined at right angles. Attached at the joint was a compass circle and from the center of the joint hung a plumb bob. The upright of the cross was put on the ground and the cross beam was pointed at a star. This required the upright beam to lean back. Then the plumb bob cord hung across the compass and a reading was taken. The knowledge of the readings, recorded through the year, became a powerful force in the hands of the leaders. This instrument was capable of fixing a person’s location within 1 to 3 miles. It also turned the universe into an enormous and powerful clock.
The stars, moon, sun and tides have been proven to have a variety of effects upon all life. This has been turned into a pseudoscience called astrology, which is hardly scientific.
But tests on a fairly large scale have clearly demonstrated that patterns develop in human behavior in ways that are related to the stars, moon, sun, and tides (a function of the sun and moon).
This is called the Delta Phenomenon. Some commodity traders have used this to follow the patterns that appeared over time (months, years) and in relation to human behavior over different periods (moon cycles, seasons, the 19-year cycle of the sun and moon, and in the short term to tide patterns.
This is a far cry from astrology, which is subjective, and should be avoided.
Nevertheless, it has been proven that we are sensitive to astronomical patterns. One doctor told me that people across the world could have been affected negatively by the changes in the rotation speed of the earth that happened at the time of the flood. The rotation speed increased and removed about five minutes from each day!
